Impeccably crafted features and attention to re-naturalization are hallmarks of the flow trail at SDSF (Called To Creation).

MBoSC is excited to announce the completion of the flow trail at Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF). Over 530 unique volunteers have donated 6,300 hours of labor since February 2014 to build this epic 4-mile trail. We could not have done this without the generous support of our volunteers, sponsors, donors, and members, and we’d love to celebrate the completion of this amazing endeavor with you!

Please join us at the GRAND OPENING ceremony and celebration on Saturday May 9, 2015 at Badger Spring Picnic Area at SDSF from 1-4pm. Badger Spring is located just down Hihns Mill Road from the bottom of Sawpit trail, and is a beautiful spot next to the creek. We’ll have a short opening ceremony plus food, drink and live music.

RSVP here as soon as possible to help us plan food and other aspects of the party. Feel free to invite others as this party is open to all. Attendees are encouraged to ride in (via the flow!) and out from the party site, but carpooling will be available for those who need it.

Have you snapped any special shots while out digging and riding the flow? We’re compiling an album of photos that document this amazing endeavor, if you’d like to contribute! Send photos, captions and credit to michele@mbosc.org.

Specialized Bicycles Volunteer Work Day Recap
Photos by Bruce Dorman
13 of Specialized Bicycles’ top pro riders joined forces with Specialized employees and trail work regulars to put the finishing touches on the flow trail at Soquel Demonstration State Forest this past Tuesday April 14. A total of 58 mountain biking enthusiasts compacted berms still moist from the most recent rain, and hand built the connecting trail between segments 5 and 6. Between the jovial atmosphere and giddy test riding, cheek muscles got a great work out as well judging by all the massive smiles.

Pacific Coffee Roasting Company fueled volunteers with morning java, and Specialized provided tasty lunches and post-workday snacks from Summit Store. Volunteers also enjoyed post-workday cold beverages donated by Ninkasi Brewing and a generous raffle sponsored by Adventure Sports Journal and Specialized. Raffle prizes included a sweatshirt and canopy tour courtesy Mt. Hermon Adventures Redwood Canopy Tours, assorted Eagle Nest Outfitters (ENO) product, ASJ t-shirts and more. Specialized generously contributed the grand prize of the day, a downhill helmet signed by Specialized pros.

Many thanks to the Specialized athletes from around the world who threw in with us on the trail: Curtis Keene, Christoph Sauser, Todd Wells, Matt Hunter, Hannah Barnes, Anneke Beerten, Lea Davison, Mitch Ropelato, Simon Andreassen, Egan Bernal, Pablo Mazuera, Howard Grotts and Sam Gaze, and of course to Specialized and its employees as well for all the support and hard work. Much appreciation as always to the day’s volunteers and sponsors, and to land manager California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) for partnering with us for this unique and innovative project.

Segment 6 opens Friday 4/17; Save the Date for 5/9 Grand Opening!
534 unique volunteers have donated 6,330 hours of labor since February 2014 to build this epic 4-mile trail. All six segments will be open effective Friday afternoon 4/17 – let’s get some tires rolling to compact the newly crafted berms on Trail Head Cyclery-sponsored segment 6!

Plus, please join us at the GRAND OPENING ceremony and celebration on Saturday May 9, 2015 at Badger Spring Picnic Area at SDSF from 1-4pm! Mark your calendar … details to be announced real soon.

Check out this Adventure Sports Journal write-up preview about the event in which Anneka Beerten, Lea Davison, Christoph Sauser and Todd Wells chime in about trail work.

Bike Santa Cruz County

Bike Santa Cruz County

Speech given by MBoSC President Mark Davidson in support of People Power’s renaming to Bike Santa Cruz County – April 7, 2015

My name is Mark Davidson and I’m a bicycle advocate. I believe that cycling is a solution to many of the worlds pressing problems. Bicycles mitigate climate change, increase public health and happiness, reduce obesity, reduce transportation gridlock and create livable communities.

Cycling is an important activity in Santa Cruz County. Our great weather has blessed us with a year round cycling season. This county has fantastic open space, wonderful trails, solitary mountain roads and a network of bikeways and paths that are part of the transportation infrastructure. Bicycles account for a growing part of the local economy. Our bike industry generates about $900M in gross revenue and a little over 1000 local jobs. Tourism is a vital part of the Santa Cruz county economy and bicycle related tourism is a growing opportunity for local businesses.

Evidence of the economic impact of cycling will be on display this weekend when we present the 6th annual Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival – the largest bicycle related event in the County. The festival is a celebration of the local bike industry, local trails, local riders and local food and brews. This year we’re bringing it back to the City of Santa Cruz at San Lorenzo Park. We will be host to cycling enthusiasts from all over the globe and show them everything that is great about Santa Cruz. We hope you can join us!
