Speech given by MBoSC President Mark Davidson in support of People Power’s renaming to Bike Santa Cruz County – April 7, 2015
My name is Mark Davidson and I’m a bicycle advocate. I believe that cycling is a solution to many of the worlds pressing problems. Bicycles mitigate climate change, increase public health and happiness, reduce obesity, reduce transportation gridlock and create livable communities.
Cycling is an important activity in Santa Cruz County. Our great weather has blessed us with a year round cycling season. This county has fantastic open space, wonderful trails, solitary mountain roads and a network of bikeways and paths that are part of the transportation infrastructure. Bicycles account for a growing part of the local economy. Our bike industry generates about $900M in gross revenue and a little over 1000 local jobs. Tourism is a vital part of the Santa Cruz county economy and bicycle related tourism is a growing opportunity for local businesses.
Evidence of the economic impact of cycling will be on display this weekend when we present the 6th annual Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival – the largest bicycle related event in the County. The festival is a celebration of the local bike industry, local trails, local riders and local food and brews. This year we’re bringing it back to the City of Santa Cruz at San Lorenzo Park. We will be host to cycling enthusiasts from all over the globe and show them everything that is great about Santa Cruz. We hope you can join us!
Boulder Creek Brewery Fire by Jeff Hill
By now you probably heard about the devastating fire that completely destroyed the wonderful Boulder Creek Brewery last Sunday. A fire that takes out a business in a small community is tragic enough but more so when it’s a community gathering place like a brewery.
The Boulder Creek Brewery has been a proud supporter of the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival and the Surfrider Cafe have hosted “community days” in which a portion of their proceeds benefit local non profits.
What you probably may not realize is that the owners of the Boulder Creek Brewery – Stephen and Nancy – also own the Surfrider Cafe.
Bike related organizations like MBoSC, Trips for Kids Santa Cruz and People Power have benefited from their generosity and it’s time to give back.
You can support Stephen, Nancy and their employees with your patronage of the Surfrider Cafe for your post ride meals.
We can’t resist shouting this one out for all you singletrack singles out there! MBoSC member Karin Wanless recently launched this fun meetup for singles in their 30s to 50s — check it out!
Looking for love on two wheels? Or at least a good workout on fat tires?
There’s a new meetup group for single mountain bikers in the Bay Area.

Mick’s Automotive SDSF Flow Trail Volunteer Work Day Recap
53 volunteers showed up at Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF) this past Sunday March 29 to build a bridge, compact berms and do renaturalization on Trail Head Cyclery-sponsored segment 6 of the flow trail. Whole Foods fueled volunteers with coffee and breakfast treats, and Mick’s Automotive provided tasty lunches and post-workday snacks from Summit Store. Volunteers also enjoyed post-workday cold beverages donated by Ninkasi Brewing and a generous raffle sponsored by Adventure Sports Journal and Ibis. Raffle prizes included a sweatshirt and canopy tour courtesy Mt. Hermon Adventures Redwood Canopy Tours, assorted Eagle Nest Outfitters (ENO) product, a Platypus water filtration system, Ninkasi brew, ASJ trucker hats and t-shirts, and more.
Many thanks to the volunteers and sponsors who came together for Sunday’s productive work event, and much appreciation to land manager California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) for partnering with us for this unique and innovative project.
Next volunteer work day: Tuesday 4/14, a special weekday event presented by Specialized Bicycles
