The Emma McCrary Trail construction has been completed!

The grand opening of the Emma McCrary Trail will be June 1st at 10 am at the Pogonip trail head on Golf Club Drive. Come out to see Mayor Hillary Bryant, designer and crew leader Drew Perkins and all the volunteers and supporters of this trail.

Over 300 of you donated 3,500+ hours and $34K to fund and build this 2 mile trail in about a year. What a fantastic accomplishment for this community. It time to celebrate!

The following map shows the locations of potential places to park. Click on the icons for details. You should consider parking far away riding to the Pogonip.

The Pogonip is a 640 acre park in Santa Cruz between the Harvey West commercial district and the campus of the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). In 1989, the Pogonip was bought by the City of Santa Cruz for $15M back from the Cowell Foundation using CALPAW state initiative funds.

There are 8.1 miles of single track and fire roads of which 0.7 miles (the U-Con trail) are open to bikes. The U-Con trail connects Hwy 9 near the Rincon parking lot to upper campus and is generally the way that mountain bikers experience the Pogonip.

In March 2012 Santa Cruz City Council passed the Parks Departments recommendation to construct the Pogonip multi-use trial. This trail will parallel the eastern boundary of the open space. This 1.5 mile long trail would connect Golf Club Drive with the U-Con Trail and the Rincon fire road and will be family and beginner friendly. It will offer a spectacular scenic trail experience through redwood trees and bay tree groves. This trail was proposed as a long term mitigation to the transient camping and herion dealing that had taken root in the area.

The benefits of the 1.5 mile multi-use trail (MUT) goes far beyond the scope of the reducing negative use. Some benefits include:

  • Provides a safe (but off road) eastern bike route into UCSC for commuters.
  • Provides additional recreational facilities for families, residents.
  • Provides more economic opportunities for downtown businesses.

We need help from the community to build and fund this trail. We need to raise about $10,000 – $15,000 to complete the construction. Please consider volunteering your time or making a donation to help make this trail a reality. The sooner we can build it the sooner we can ride it.

Thank you very much for your support!

Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz

Scot Nicol at Bike Magazine’s first founders event

April 25th, 2013

While we were all going crazy with the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival, Ibis Cycles founder and mountain bike legend Scot Nicol was in San Francisco at Mission Workshop doing a Bike Magazine founders event on April 12th.

We are really pleased that Scot mentions Ibis’s support of bike advocacy and the Sierra Butte’s campaign. He also mentions the Pogonip (Emma McCrary) trail, the flow trail in Demo and the Own the Flow raffle in particular.

The whole interview is great but fast forward to min 14:50 to see the advocacy part.

You can see the story behind the founders event and the full 2 hour interview with Scot at the Bike Magazine link.

Enjoy and remember to Own the Flow and buy a piece of this new flow trail!

One year later

March 29th, 2013

It’s amazing that it has just been over one year since the Santa Cruz City Council approved the Emma McCrary Trail (then the East Multi-Use Trail). I am just blown away by the community support for this project and all the love and care and sweat that have gone into making this beautiful, fun, and sustainable trail. We have had over 3,000 volunteer hours and $30,000 donated towards this project and are getting close to completion.

On Thursday, the beams for the two 35′ bridges were delivered. Big thanks to Tom Wilson and his crew at Geo H. Wilson Mechanical Contracting for assisting us with the unloading and transport of the beams into the park. The beams would not fit under the railroad trestle on Big Creek’s truck. Using a crane, flatbed, and backhoe they were able to get the beams delivered as close as possible to the trail, ready for the next step in the process. Next Saturday, April 6th, we will be moving and placing the beams on the abutments. This work will take care, teamwork, and communication to get the job done safely, as well as a whole bunch of volunteers.

If you would like to assist in one of the last steps in completing this trail, please sign up at www.trailworkers.com. We will meet at 9 am at the Pogonip Ranger Station. Coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters and Muffins from Rebecca’s at the Tannery. We are looking for a lunch sponsor.

Email trails@mbosc.org for more info.

Thanks!

Next Emma McCrary Trail Workday Saturday, March 16th.

March 11th, 2013

We had a great workday on Saturday with 27 volunteers. We poured the abutment for the Redwood Creek Bridge and built a smaller bridge over a small ditch on the approach. Our next workday (March 16th) we will be building two more small bridges and a working on a few other tasks to get the trail ready to open. The South Bay Mountain Biking Meetup Group will be sponsoring lunch on the 16th. Please sign up at www.trailworkers.com.

We will be meeting at the Pogonip Ranger Station at 9am and working until 1pm. The ranger station is a few hundred feet past the old clubhouse and it takes about 10 minutes to walk to from the gate at the end of Golf Club Drive. Parking has been real tight on workdays at Golf Club Drive and there have been some complaints from neighbors. It would be great if people could park at the City corporation yard lot or along Golf Club Drive before the train trestle. We will have Rebecca’s Mighty Muffins donated by Rebecca’s at the Tannery. Please bring sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, and water. Tools and instruction will be provided. Questions? email trails@mbosc.org

The home stretch – Emma McCrary Trail Update. Next workday Sunday February 24th.

Building rock wall near north end of trail

Our last workday began with tasty coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters and Rebecca’s Mighty Muffins from Rebecca’s at the Tannery (they have beer too for post ride recovery). The 25 volunteers split up into two teams and hand built the several hundred feet across the meadows that connect Golf Club Drive to the portion of the trail we built earlier in the year. After a hard day’s work we enjoyed pizza and beverages courtesy of Eric Decker. Special thanks to Pierre Tardiff who climbed two large beautiful oaks near the southern bridge site and removed a huge amount of ivy from the trees. They look great now!

Students from Ponderosa High build a rock wall near Rincon Road

We have also been busy working on the U-Con end of the trail. For the last five weeks we have had high school volunteers working with the Santa Cruz Natural History Museum’s  Earth Stewards Project come work on the trail. The students from Natural Bridges and Ponderosa High Schools have been great! The last three weeks they collected rocks and built two walls on the north end of the trail. This Friday we will have students from Ponderosa, Natural Bridges, and Georgiana Bruce Kirby working on the trail and hope to finish cutting the north end of the trail. Thank you to Peter at the Natural History Museum for coordinating these groups.

John leads the effort

Tom and Emilio secure rebar in the form

Speaking of bridges, work has begun on the first of our two big bridges. Big, big, thank you to regular volunteer and professional contractor John Cunniff for providing his construction knowledge and experience and leading the effort to get the bridge work started. Also, thank you to Brad and Bruce for providing some pro-bono engineering work.

Excavating pads for bridge abutments

On President’s Day John, Tom, Gary, Emilio donated their holiday to install forms and rebar for the abutments of the bridge on the south end of the trail a few hundred feet from Golf Club Drive. It is likely John will be working on finishing up the abutments Wednesday and/or Friday and could use a helper or two. Please email me if you are interested in helping.

Which brings me to our next workday this Sunday February 24th. We are hoping that we will be transporting and pouring concrete for the abutments and maybe moving the stringers to the bridge sites, as well as a few other tasks. This day will take some organizing with several different crews going, so please sign up at www.trailworkers.com, it really helps!
