We finally processed all the data and and we have a total of 8882 entries and raised a total of $44,410 for the new flow trail. There were 1,640 supporters with an average donation of $27. We added all the entries to a spreadsheet in no particular order and used random.org to pick a number between 1-8882. The number chosen was 7692.

The lucky winner of the Own the Flow Ibis bike is…. Joel Steinberg of Lodi, California. You bought a nice chunk of dirt and have been rewarded with a sweet new bike from Ibis, FOX, Easton and Shimano! Congratulations Joel!

Joel is such a deserving guy. He’s a medical doctor in Lodi, and comes down to Santa Cruz a few times a month to ride his bike. He currently rides a 26 inch hard tail and has chosen the Ripley – his first 29er – to enjoy the trails of Santa Cruz. He has been one of our most generous supporters of MBoSC and the Emma McCrary trail in particular. Then he started to give us something more valuable: his time. He regularly comes out to work on the Emma McCrary trail when in town and volunteered for the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival.

MBoSC would like to thank FOX, Easton Cycling, Shimano and especially Scot Nicol and Ibis Cycles for their participation in this fund raiser. Thanks to Eve for legal and finance, Kyle M for graphics, Daryl, Seb, Drew, Dave, Patty, Tammy and many others worked the Sea Otter and Santa Theresa in support of this raffle.

A special thanks to Alan S for being an incredible volunteer for us in the month of April. He stepped up and completely owned sound for the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival and didn’t finish with the festival until 2:30 am the next morning. This didn’t embitter him on MBoSC and he went to the Sea Otter and was selling Own the Flow tickets all 4 days in the Ibis Cycles booth. As if that wasn’t enough he set up the MBoSC booth and provided solar powered tunes for Trail Head Cyclery‘s demo at Santa Theresa. He’s been a generous volunteer and drove a lot of face to face ticket sales for Own the Flow. I’m so pleased that Alan managed to spend a few hours on the Ripley last Sunday and had a very enjoyable ride. Thank you Alan!

Thank you all for participating in this fund raiser. We are all winners because we will be starting the flow trail project within a month!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT michele@mbosc.org

MOUNTAIN BIKERS OF SANTA CRUZ ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL 4th ANNUAL SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL

Santa Cruz, CA, April 23, 2013—Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBoSC) is pleased to announce a successful 4th Annual Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival presented by MBoSC and FOX. The event was held in Aptos Village, CA at the Barry Swenson Builders property (Aptos Pump Track and Post Office Jumps) courtesy of Barry Swenson Builders. The eco-conscious festival drew over 9,000 attendees and 395 registered participants—a 50% increase in attendance and 220% increase in registered participation over 2012—in Aptos, California.

This family friendly two-day, volunteer-run festival included competitive events, kids’ rodeo, skills clinics, demo bikes, an exposition area, food court, beer garden, live band and more for bike enthusiasts, family members, and friends.

Early reports indicate a substantial increase in growth for activities, attendance, and funds raised compared to 2012’s successful event.

“We are happy to announce this event grows larger each year. We believe this is an indication that the love for mountain biking is spreading at a tremendous rate. We are extremely pleased to be able to provide a festival that fosters and supports a healthy activity for all.”—Mark Davidson, President of Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz

Those who attended enjoyed multiple activities and competitive events. Over 300 kids aged 12 and under tried their skills at the Kids’ Rodeo and enjoyed a Fun Lap on the Short Track. Those wishing to improve their skills flocked to clinics offered by pro riders such as Kat Sweet and Kirt and Lindsey Voreis. Bike aficionados checked out the latest from top bike industry vendors, demo’d bikes from a record number of top bike manufacturers, and shuttled to the renowned Soquel Demonstration State Forest (Demo). The first day’s festivities concluded with a Saturday after-party featuring Oakland funk/reggae/rock band WhoGas and both days featured raffles.

Sponsored Support

Sponsors from around the US and Canada generously contributed cash, merchandise, and services to this event. Donated product and services raised funds through a silent auction and raffles, and rewarded athletes and volunteers. With many of the sponsors headquartered locally, it is evident there’s a deep commitment to mountain biking in the Santa Cruz community.

Volunteer Operated

The Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival is presented by Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBoSC), a 100% volunteer non-profit mountain bike advocacy organization. MBoSC recruited over 150 volunteers to design, market, and run the festival. It is the passion and dedication of these people who organize, fund and run events, build and ride trails, and work in the industry that makes Santa Cruz a mecca for the sport.

Greening the Festival

In keeping with their pro-environment mission, MBoSC continually strives to reduce the environmental impact of events. This year, three solar vendors—Allterra Solar, Sandbar Solar and Moved By Bikes—and MBoSC provided 5 solar arrays supplying all power requirements for the festival. All sound equipment, computers, printers and water pumps were powered exclusively by solar. With on-site parking unavailable, riding bikes to the event was encouraged. People Power of Santa Cruz provided free valet bike parking and parked 650 bikes over the weekend. All food vendors contributed toward waste reduction by eliminating single use plastic plates and cutlery from their service, and supported the festival’s ban on the sale of bottled water. Attendees were encouraged to bring reusable water vessels to the festival to take advantage of the free filtered water provided by Zuvo Water from a custom built bar created especially for the event.

65% of the waste created at the festival was diverted from the landfill to recycling, an admirable first effort that provided MBoSC with baseline data that will help achieve a higher diversion rate in the future.

Mission Accomplished

The mission of the festival is to celebrate the world class mountain bike facilities, riders, and cycling industry of Santa Cruz County by bringing the community together to participate in recreational and competitive mountain bike events. Funds raised by the event will benefit projects and organizations that support mountain biking in Santa Cruz County.

The festival reflected what Santa Cruz in general is all about: loving the outdoors, meeting friendly people, kicking back and enjoying that big stoke from your favorite sport.

Competitive Events Results: First Place Winners Announced

215 professional, amateur, and junior athletes flocked to Santa Cruz to participate in various competitive events. Jumpers, pumpers, and short track racers all got their chance to shine at this year’s festival and win cash or sponsor gear. Full standings can be found on the results page of the festival website.

Be part of the effort to build the best singletrack in Santa Cruz County by donating today! We need to raise $100,000 to build a four mile flow trail in Soquel Demo Forest and our friends at Ibis Cycles have launched the fundraising effort by donating the much anticipated Ripley 29 or the award winning Mojo HD – YOUR CHOICE.

FOX, Shimano and Easton Cycling have joined the effort to get this trail going by equipping the new Ripley with all the goodies to get you on the trail and RIPPING!

With the Ripley, Ibis wanted to bring the advantages of a 29” wheel to a lightweight, nimble and fun trailbike. They gave it 120mm of travel front and rear, which hits the sweet spot for a snappy bike that isn’t cumbersome or heavy. It’s approved for 140mm forks too, if you want to veer away from XC and head over to trailbike country. As with most Ibises, it’s a super versatile bike. The most unique feature of the Ripley might be its dual eccentric linkages, which are the brainchild of Mr. dw-link himself, Dave Weagle. Ibis had Dave give the Ripley pedaling efficiency, XC-like acceleration and it was optimized for 29er specific gearing. The Ripley also features the usual dw-attributes such as excellent small bump compliance, predictable travel through the range with no wallowing or harsh bottom out.

It’s the most anticipated Ibis ever, and they have generously agreed to donate one to our cause.

If you like 26″ wheels, Ibis has you covered there too. The winner of the drawing can also choose a Mojo HD, a trail bike known the world over for its incredible capabilities. The “HD” has 160mm of rear wheel travel and has won more accolades from the press than any bike Ibis has done to date.

Donations of $5 each qualifies for a ticket in the drawing. Donate $40 and earn a membership to MBoSC too. The more you donate, the sooner the trail gets built. 100% of the money raised goes to building the flow trail.

Donations will also be available for $5 at Trailhead Cyclery and Another Bike Shop. In addition, you will have the opportunity to purchase tickets at the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival on April 13-14 and at the Ibis Cycles booth #412 at the Sea Otter Classic April 18-21.

It’s amazing that it has just been over one year since the Santa Cruz City Council approved the Emma McCrary Trail (then the East Multi-Use Trail). I am just blown away by the community support for this project and all the love and care and sweat that have gone into making this beautiful, fun, and sustainable trail. We have had over 3,000 volunteer hours and $30,000 donated towards this project and are getting close to completion.

On Thursday, the beams for the two 35′ bridges were delivered. Big thanks to Tom Wilson and his crew at Geo H. Wilson Mechanical Contracting for assisting us with the unloading and transport of the beams into the park. The beams would not fit under the railroad trestle on Big Creek’s truck. Using a crane, flatbed, and backhoe they were able to get the beams delivered as close as possible to the trail, ready for the next step in the process. Next Saturday, April 6th, we will be moving and placing the beams on the abutments. This work will take care, teamwork, and communication to get the job done safely, as well as a whole bunch of volunteers.

If you would like to assist in one of the last steps in completing this trail, please sign up at www.trailworkers.com. We will meet at 9 am at the Pogonip Ranger Station. Coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters and Muffins from Rebecca’s at the Tannery. We are looking for a lunch sponsor.

Email trails@mbosc.org for more info.

Thanks!

We had a great workday on Saturday with 27 volunteers. We poured the abutment for the Redwood Creek Bridge and built a smaller bridge over a small ditch on the approach. Our next workday (March 16th) we will be building two more small bridges and a working on a few other tasks to get the trail ready to open. The South Bay Mountain Biking Meetup Group will be sponsoring lunch on the 16th. Please sign up at www.trailworkers.com.

We will be meeting at the Pogonip Ranger Station at 9am and working until 1pm. The ranger station is a few hundred feet past the old clubhouse and it takes about 10 minutes to walk to from the gate at the end of Golf Club Drive. Parking has been real tight on workdays at Golf Club Drive and there have been some complaints from neighbors. It would be great if people could park at the City corporation yard lot or along Golf Club Drive before the train trestle. We will have Rebecca’s Mighty Muffins donated by Rebecca’s at the Tannery. Please bring sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, and water. Tools and instruction will be provided. Questions? email trails@mbosc.org

Our last workday began with tasty coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters and Rebecca’s Mighty Muffins from Rebecca’s at the Tannery (they have beer too for post ride recovery). The 25 volunteers split up into two teams and hand built the several hundred feet across the meadows that connect Golf Club Drive to the portion of the trail we built earlier in the year. After a hard day’s work we enjoyed pizza and beverages courtesy of Eric Decker. Special thanks to Pierre Tardiff who climbed two large beautiful oaks near the southern bridge site and removed a huge amount of ivy from the trees. They look great now!

We have also been busy working on the U-Con end of the trail. For the last five weeks we have had high school volunteers working with the Santa Cruz Natural History Museum’s Earth Stewards Project come work on the trail. The students from Natural Bridges and Ponderosa High Schools have been great! The last three weeks they collected rocks and built two walls on the north end of the trail. This Friday we will have students from Ponderosa, Natural Bridges, and Georgiana Bruce Kirby working on the trail and hope to finish cutting the north end of the trail. Thank you to Peter at the Natural History Museum for coordinating these groups.

Speaking of bridges, work has begun on the first of our two big bridges. Big, big, thank you to regular volunteer and professional contractor John Cunniff for providing his construction knowledge and experience and leading the effort to get the bridge work started. Also, thank you to Brad and Bruce for providing some pro-bono engineering work.

Excavating pads for bridge abutments

On President’s Day John, Tom, Gary, Emilio donated their holiday to install forms and rebar for the abutments of the bridge on the south end of the trail a few hundred feet from Golf Club Drive. It is likely John will be working on finishing up the abutments Wednesday and/or Friday and could use a helper or two. Please email me if you are interested in helping.

Which brings me to our next workday this Sunday February 24th. We are hoping that we will be transporting and pouring concrete for the abutments and maybe moving the stringers to the bridge sites, as well as a few other tasks. This day will take some organizing with several different crews going, so please sign up at www.trailworkers.com, it really helps!

We will be meeting at the Pogonip Ranger Station at 9am and working until 1pm. Park your car or bike at the gate at the end of Golf Club Drive and walk up the paved road for about 10 minutes. The ranger station is a few hundred feet past the old clubhouse. Parking has been real tight on workdays at Golf Club Drive and there have been some complaints from neighbors. It would be great if people could park at the City corporation yard lot or along Golf Club Drive before the train trestle.

We will have very tasty coffee to get us started donated by Verve Coffee Roasters as well as Rebecca’s Mighty Muffins donated by Rebecca’s at the Tannery. Pizza lunch after work courtesy of Amy Haberman D.C.

Please bring sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, and water. Tools and instruction will be provided.

Next workday on the Emma McCrary Trail in Pogonip will be Saturday, February 9th at 9 am.

This trail will connect U-Con to Golf Club Drive and is designed to be a sustainable, beginner friendly, and fun way to get from downtown Santa Cruz to Henry Cowell, the upper UCSC Campus, and Wilder Ranch State Park.

We will be meeting at the Pogonip Ranger Station at 9am and working until 1pm. Park your car or bike at the gate at the end of Golf Club Drive and walk up the paved road for about 10 minutes. The ranger station is a few hundred feet past the old clubhouse.

Looks like the weather will be nice again this weekend. A big thank you to Eric Decker for sponsoring Woodstock Pizza this trail day. We will have very tasty coffee to get us started donated by Verve Coffee Roasters as well as Rebecca’s Mighty Muffins donated by Rebecca’s at the Tannery.

Please bring sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, and water. We will be working on building the southern end of the trail connecting to Golf Club Drive and much of the work will be out of the trees so bring sunscreen, hat and sunglasses as well. I can also promise poison oak free work opportunities at this workday. Tools and instruction will be provided.

This time lapse shows the progress we made building a rock wall at the southern end during the last session over the course of a couple hours.

We are starting to get close to finishing the trail and I am hoping that it will open by the end of March, weather permitting. We have been making progress on the bridges and should start construction soon. I will send out more info soon if you would like to help. The last three weeks we have partnered with the Earth Stewards Project at the Natural History Museum to bring local high school kids out to help with construction of the trail. We have had great groups from Natural Bridges and Ponderosa High Schools and I want to thank them for their hard work.

The next scheduled workday after this weekend is February 24th, and we are also meeting regularly at 8:45 AM on Thursdays at the Ranger Station to do trailwork as well. Hope to see some of you out there.
