The Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival (SCMBF) was first held in 2010 and has grown each year since. This family friendly two-day, volunteer-run festival includes competitive events, a kids’ obstacle course, skills clinics, demo bikes, an exposition area, food court, beer garden, live band and more for bike enthusiasts, family members, and friends. This free event showcases mountain bike culture in the Santa Cruz area and strongly encourages community participation. Funds raised benefit bike projects throughout Santa Cruz County; for example, the 2011 event raised over $15,000 toward a permanent bike park in Aptos.
The 2013 SCMBF event featured an increased focus on environmental sustainability, fundraising, and advocacy. The festival boasted an estimated 9,000 attendees (50% increase over 2012), 395 registered participants (220% increase), over 300 kids’ rodeo participants (50% increase) and 50 vendors and 14 bike demos. The environmental impact of the festival was greatly reduced with the help of three solar vendors and five solar arrays to power sound and IT, plus a 65% diversion rate of waste from going into a landfill was achieved. Attendees were encouraged to utilize bike transport to the festival, with People Power parking over 650 bikes at their bike valet station. Through raffles and beer sales over $22,000 was raised for local mountain bike projects and organizations. The festival has elicited favorable coverage in many renowned mountain bike forums such as Adventure Sports Journal, decline magazine, Bike Magazine, Dirt Rag magazine, mbaction.com, VitalMTB.com, Pinkbike.com and MTBR.com.
