Flow Trail at Demo Update: Cleared to Break Ground

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve cleared the last regulatory hurdle before the start of construction with the finalization of the CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) document. We are very grateful to CAL FIRE for shepherding this process because it means we have the green light to BREAK GROUND!

The Flow Trail at Demo project is a partnership between MBoSC and CAL FIRE in Soquel Demonstration State Forest and will be the first flow trail on public land in the region. A flow trail is designed specifically for mountain biking. It varies speed and rhythm in a playful way, featuring berms, rollers, jumps and other features that are designed to capture the rider’s momentum and minimize pedaling and braking.

Three uniquely qualified employees have been hired by MBoSC for this extensive endeavor. Work days and volunteers will be coordinated by Project Manager Patty Ciesla, while dirt moving operations will be managed by MBoSC Trails Officer Drew Perkins with Matt De Young’s assistance. In addition to this paid staff, over 40 crew leaders—trained by MBoSC—will lead volunteers in the field.

Large scale volunteer work parties led by this inspired expertise will accelerate the project. We are on target to be riding an awesome new trail THIS YEAR!

Significant financial contributions have given this project an excellent start, but we need help to raise the estimated $60,000 needed to complete the trail. Sponsors can host volunteer workdays, adopt segments of the trail, and purchase necessary equipment.

Special thanks to benefactor Jeff Rothschild for his astounding $40,000 donation, and to Ibis Cycles who—with the additional support of FOX, Shimano and Easton Cycling—made it possible to generate over $44,000 through our “Own the Flow” Ibis Ripley raffle.

Contact us to volunteer, sponsor, or make a private donation. Your support is much appreciated!
