Pogonip Cleanup Event was a Success!

Over 40 folks showed up to spend a Sunday morning in late August hiking and picking up garbage in the east side of the Pogonip. This event was organized by Take Back Santa Cruz (TBSC) and Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz but we extended the invitation to folks in Friends of the Pogonip who are generally not supportive of the multi-use trail. I was really pleased that Celia Scott showed up!

The City has been doing a great job breaking up the large camps and cleaning up the garbage near the tracks. Our group focused on the garbage and hovels that are in the more remote areas and spread out through the east side.

We were a hardy and productive bunch and hauled out about 12-15 yards of trash (about 50 bags). We cleaned up behind the clubhouse (a dumping ground from when it was operational) and cleaned up to the Big Trees property line and down the slope. We found an old bike, a broken suitcase, lots of moldy bedding and clothing and discarded food containers. Remnants of drug activity was still evident. We found about 10-15 used syringes, lots of lighters, burnt foil and torn up aluminum cans. Everyone worked hard and we wrapped it up at around 1 pm.

Thank you for everyone who gave up a Sunday morning to help clean up the community! Thank you to the Parks Department and the City of Santa Cruz for providing a 20 yard dumpster. Thank you to Ranger Gar Eidam for watching out for us.

There was an article on this cleanup which featured some interviews and pictures posted on Santa Cruz Patch.

Next steps: now that you have seen the area and the pin flagging, you can see how putting in this trail will be a valuable asset to the City of Santa Cruz. Please write to the City Council to put this trail on the agenda: citycouncil@cityofsantacruz.com.

Thanks again for coming out and making a difference in the community!
